  • King drive through city in his chariot
  • in the evening, chariot was left outside in the courtyard when they arrived back home in the evening. Horses returned to the stables.
  • started to rain
  • palace dogs saw the leather on the chariot softening in the rain and came to chew on them. they did this all night and left when it became morning
  • the stablemen announced that the straps were eaten and destroyed
  • they tell the king that royal chariot was destroyed and that it was the work of the dogs in the night
  • the king ordered to kill the dogs; to slay each one in the city
  • 700 dogs in the city heard the announcement and became scared. However, one dog, the chief, cared for and protected all of the dogs. the other dogs went out to go find him
  • when they found him he asked what was wrong and what brings them all together? All the dogs looked really sad
  • one of the dogs tells the chief that the leather chariot was damaged and that the king blames all of the dogs in the city; he has ordered to kill all of the dogs
  • the chief tells them that no one has access past the palace gates and that it was the palace dogs who destroyed the chariot; innocent ones are destroyed; He states that he will show the guilty dogs to the king and that the city dogs will be spared
  • as he made his way to the palace, all of the men looked as if they would kill him but he filled his eyes with love and no one touched him
  • the royal guards even let him through the gates
  • he faced the king and asked him if it was true that he wanted all the dogs killed; the king said yes
  • chief asked what have the city dogs done? king replied that the destroyed the straps; chief asked tif he knew which dogs did the damage and the king did not know so he ordered all dogs to be killed except the royalty dogs - they should be spared
  • to prove that the royal dogs were guilty the chief asked the the king to bring the dogs and feed them food
  • when the dogs went to eat, the shreds of leather fell from their teeth
  • the king saw and apologized to the chief; all the dogs of the city were fed royal food and were cared for every day of their lives after that day.
