Introduction to a Future Nurse

My name is Shivani Gandhi and I am a senior psychology major at the University of Oklahoma. The coolest thing about my major is that it can be utilized in pretty much any field out there. A person knowledgeable about psychology can assist anyone and some companies have a special position for people who have studied psychology. I love school and I will try my best to make any class fun and I think of classes as a stepping stone to where I need to be. I try to make them enjoyable by relating them to concepts I will have to face in the future and how these classes will help me get there. My favorite and best class from last semester was Human Sexuality with Professor Dennison because I loved the way he taught the subject. He was funny and made the topics not embarrassing to talk about on a daily basis. I also learned some pretty useful things in the class that will help me in the future.

My biggest accomplishments last semester were completing and submitting my application for Nursing at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. Another big accomplishment last semester was getting through the entire winter break of working two jobs so that I can start saving money for nursing school. That being said, my break was not that enjoyable. However, I did get to spend some time with my family at home for the last 5-6 days of winter break before coming back to Norman for the spring semester.

I had always been an avid reader during my childhood years. I would snuggle up with a good book and it would be a really enjoyable thing I always looked forward to. I read more books than I watched television. During my teenage years, I was really interested in young adult science fiction romance. I kind of used reading as a way to escape the reality of high school and living in a small town that I did not like that much. I loved the Gone series by Michael Grant and The Mortal Instrument series by Cassandra Clare. The Lux series by Jennifer Armentrout was also a favorite of mine.

Starting college, I have not had much time to read books anymore. However, I do watch television shows and watch movies during my free time, particularly the weekends and during breaks (sometimes even during breaks in between classes). My favorite television shows are Riverdale, The Good Doctor, The Flash, Lucifer, Once Upon a Time, Supernatural, Jane the Virgin, and Grey's Anatomy. I am caught up on most of these shows, but some have so many seasons released, that they are in the double digits so it will take some time to get caught up on those. I am fond of animated movies so I enjoy ones like Finding Nemo, Monster's Inc., Moana, etc. I don't really watch too many English movies, but I do watch Bollywood ones. My favorites out of those are Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Ek Villain, and Aashiqui 2.

My favorite type of music is classical and nature music, like the ones one would listen to in a spa or while trying to fall asleep. I listen to a lot of study music and I have found that this type of music really helps me concentrate while working on school stuff. On the daily, I listen to top 40 music that is playing on the radio. My favorite artists are Justin Timberlake, The Weeknd, and Selena Gomez, among many others.

My short-term goals are to finish my last semester at OU and help my family get their business established and opened up by the first week of February, at the latest. A longer-term goal for me is to get accepted into the ABSN program that starts in June this year and get through the 14 months of rigorous coursework. Another long-term goal is to pass the NCLEX exam and become a nurse. My practical goal is to get married in the next 5-6 years and start a family. A big dream goal for me is to open an orphanage and a non-profit hospital/clinic in my family's village in Gujarat, India. This way the community has access to medical care, medications/prenatal vitamins, vaccinations, and other resources that are currently scarce in the area.

  1. Hi Shivani, thanks for sharing a little about yourself. I noticed you said you liked science fiction romance novels. If you haven't already, you should see The Shape of Water. I saw it over break and was blown away. It is a beautiful movie and is likely to win big at the Oscars. Best of luck as you apply to nursing school!

  2. Hey Shivani! nice intorduction! My girlfriend is also in nursing program! She just started the program at OCCC and she is totally loving it! I noticed that you like to read books and well I share a similar taste but personally I favor the comic books. I also found that it was hard to read books while attending school full time and I plan on catching up during the breaks!.

  3. That combination of psychology and nursing sounds excellent, Shivani! So much of the work that nurses do is about patients' minds as much as their bodies, and any psychological insights you have will be a big plus for sure. I hope you will enjoy the reading for this class, and science fiction romance is definitely a possible storytelling style; you might enjoy looking at this really cool project from last semester which ended up in outer space with a Lakshmi / Star Trek mash-up; it was so cool! Sita, Sidewalks, Shadows. Stars ... and I am really glad that this class can connect up with your family heritage and your future plans to work in Gujarat. Do you speak Gujarati? That will allow you to explore Gujarati videos at YouTube, like at Pebbles Gujatrati... scroll down for Ramayan | Bhagavad Gita | Tirupati Balaji | Hamuman | Krishna Stories in Gujarati ... :-)

  4. Hi Shivani! I definitely agree that psychology relates to everything. Every time I take a psychology class, I find myself relating it to real world examples and bringing it up in every conversation. I’m sorry that you had to work two jobs last semester, that sounds so stressful! I usually work a ton during breaks too. I wish you lots of luck on getting into nursing school! Wow, we have so much in common! We have the same favorite shows and artists.

  5. Hey Shivani, I am also a psychology major. I love all of the different things that I have gotten to learn in my psychology courses and agree that it can be applied to help in many different jobs. I also enjoy reading but I like mystery novels. Hopefully once I have graduated I can get back to reading for fun, but you may have to wait a little longer since you will be getting into nursing school. I recently started watching the TV show Riverdale and am now obsessed. I even have my ringtone set as "Lollipop" like when the Black hood calls Betty. Good luck on your last semester and getting into nursing school.

  6. Hello Shivani, I love how down to earth your introduction was. You really are in touch with what you want out of life, which is really refreshing to see nowadays. Both my parents are psychologists and you're right, a lot of companies hire psychologists for specific analysis. One of my friends who recently graduated with a p.h.d is working for a company in Texas analyzing and maximizing production. I hope you accomplish all your dreams, and if you keep working as hard as you do I'm sure you will.

  7. Hi Shivani, Wow looks like you have a lot on your plate. Us Psychology Majors have a lot of options and a lot of knowledge that can be helpful to many people. Your break sounded so busy but I bet your family is so proud of you for all your hard work. I hope you get all your dreams. I also lived in a small town and out in the country where it costs extra to have internet and cable so I grew up with very limited tv. Keep up the good work on all that you want to do.

  8. Hi Shivani,

I like the way you present yourself and how much you love the stuff that you enjoy. I am not fond of psychology but I got to learn so many new things and I was really happy about it. I also like TV shows and I watch them too but it’s been so long since I haven't seen a single TV show. Work hard and nothing can keep you from achieving your goals.

  10. Hi Shivani! I like watching The Flash too! I've been meaning to watch The Good Doctor but haven't had a chance to I've heard it's a good show! I also like reading and would use it as a way to escape reality. I still read now too but only before bed. Psychology is a very interesting field. I also like to watch a lot of Bollywood movies with my parents when I go home on the weekends! I don't really have any favorite movies in particular but I do like the ones that are mysteries or crime dramas. I also like comedies. That's awesome that you want to open up an orphanage in India. 11. Hey Shivani!

Funny thing, we just saw each other and your name showed up when I refreshed my page. Ah I definitely miss the days that I would be able to sit down and read books for fun, I am pretty sure that I haven't read for fun ever since starting my junior year of high school. Catching up on shows is what I do on my breaks too, Grey's Anatomy, Supernatural, and Lucifer are definitely some of my favorites! It is amazing that you want to start up a clinic/hospital in your village! Good luck this semester!

  12. Hi, Shivani! We seem to have a lot in common which is always so cool to learn, even in online classes like this! I am also pre-nursing, but I am not applying to any schools until after my summer classes. Also, I love to read as well. The Mortal Instrument Series, and the Lux Series about both incredible! I hate that you had to work so much over break, but at least you know you are good at multitasking now, and will be well prepared for the workload of nursing school.

And congratulation on getting your Nursing Application and in the near future you will be getting accepted into OU nursing school. 16. Hey Shivani! I agree with you on the psychology major's versatility. That's what I wanted to do originally to make myself unique and interesting for PA school, but everyone around me said there was not enough overlap between the degree and prerequisites. I was worried I'd be overwhelmed, but I took lifespan development last semester and really enjoyed it. Your winter break sounds rough, but I'm sure you racked up some money doing that! Hopefully you get to do something more fun for spring break. I also really loved reading and read both the Gone books and the Mortal Instruments series. Have you read the Infernal Devices? They're a sort of spin off by Cassandra Clare and I really enjoyed them. Good luck with nursing and your semester!

  19. Hi Shivani! Until I read your intro post I never really thought about how psychology majors really could work anywhere such as in corporate offices! Thanks for opening my mind up to that! Also, I am currently watching Jane the Virgin on Netflix and I absolutely love it. At first, I wasn't really into it but now I think I only have 3 episodes left. It was great getting to learn about you! I look forward to reading more of your posts.

  25. I miss reading so much. College has put a serious damper on my reading as well! That's why I take classes like this one, hoping that I can make reading fiction part of my life again in some way. I look forward to the day that I only have to worry about working instead of working AND school, because working 40 hours a week would still leave plenty of time and energy for books!

  26. Hey Shivani! College definitely slows down the amount of leisure reading time, which was probably one of the biggest disappointments for me when I first started college. I think it is really cool that you want to use your nursing degree as an opportunity to help those less fortunate than yourself. Good luck getting into nursing school!

  27. Hey Shivani, this was a really cool introduction. I used to read books all of the time in elementary school, but ever since they became associated with classes I have struggled to read recreationally. I hope that this is something that will be easier for you after you are done with college! Going to nursing school is ambitious and with your determination and dreams, I doubt that you will have any problems succeeding!

  28. Hello Shivani! I really like how you did your introduction. It's awesome that you already know what you want to do. Nursing school will be challenging but rewarding as well for sure. Working two jobs sounds challenging, but it sounds like you have the determination to get it done, which is commendable. Starting a business with your family sounds fun and exciting. I hope it turns out well!
