Sammy and the Keeper

There was once an elephant named Sammy who was a kind and loving animal. His keeper built him a lovely living quarter that was connected to his house so that the elephant did not feel like he was not part of the family. The keeper had a wife and 2 kids who would come play with Sammy every day after school. Sammy was so happy and blessed to be a part of such a great family. He was content with his life. He would help with chores outside the house, like sweeping the outside concrete or watering the plants. Sammy would even help the keeper's wife with hanging laundry outside on the clothesline. Sammy would never do anything to hurt anyone, especially his family who treated him so well.
One night, after the family hugged and kissed Sammy goodnight and went to sleep, a group of thieves happened to congregate right outside of Sammy's sleeping quarters. They were planning to break into most of the houses in a nearby neighborhood. The main leader of the group suggested killing people who were any kind of witness to the break-ins. Sammy had never heard of or been around this type of behavior. He was always influenced by kindness and giving, thanks to his kind-hearted keeper and his family. However, after the thieves left, Sammy began to reconsider his behavior. After listening to the thieves, his mindset changed and he thought it was right to hurt people and destroy property to get what he wants.
The next morning, the keeper came to complete his normal duties to feed and clean Sammy. He saw that the entirety of Sammy's home was destroyed. As soon as he made eye contact with Sammy, he could see the darkness in his eyes. The keeper was worried and immediately called the veterinarian over to take a look at Sammy.
The veterinarian explained that there was nothing physically wrong with Sammy, but could not explain the sudden rage that took over Sammy. He has never seen such a behavior change with no obvious cause. However, he informed the keeper that elephants are really emotional creatures who can be influenced by the smallest things, good or bad. After the veterinarian left, the keeper went to see the surveillance footage of the night before Sammy's behavior change. He saw the group of thieves and put two and two together. Sammy was badly influenced by whatever the thieves were talking about.
The keeper went to Sammy, sat down opposite to Sammy, and talked to him. He told him to not be influenced by bad behavior. Hurting people and destroying things is wrong, and also having a bad attitude is not good for him or the people around him. Sammy understood the keeper and slowly walked over to him. He wrapped his trunk around the keeper and gave him a big hug. He did not need words to tell the keeper that he loved him and that he was sorry. From that day, Sammy was not badly influenced by anything or anyone.

Author's Note:
The original story involved a king who was the owner of the elephant named Girly Face. When the thieves taught the elephant to become bad, the King called keepers to see what was wrong with his elephant. Girly Face killed all of the keepers. The king figured that if his elephant was so easily influenced by the thieves, if he sent good people to Girly Face, he would be eavioly influenced by them and he would be a good elephant, so that is exactly what the king did and Girly face became good.

  2. I loved your story here! It was nice to read one that has an animal as a main character. It being an elephant for me is just a plus! I love elephants so of course you could see why I would be a fan of your story here. I thought it was an easy read and one that kept me engaged. Great job!

  3. Hi Taylor! Your story was very straightforward and stayed quite true to the original telling. I loved that story, and I think you did it justice! I was curious why an elephant would be so gullible, so it would be interesting to have a retelling that made a more convincing case for being a bad elephant, instead of Girly Face being changed to quickly and easily.

  4. Hello again Shivani! I like that you decided to stay pretty close to the original context of the story because the message is a very good one. As individuals, we tend to reflect the behavior of the people around us. So, if we surround ourselves with good people, then we tend to reflect those actions and behaviors. Great story!

  5. Hey Shivani! Great job on this story! I really enjoyed reading the original story of Girly-Face and this is a wonderful alteration to it. I like how you adopted the story to take place in modern time with veterinarians and surveillance footage. It made the story easier to read and more relatable. I also really enjoyed the personal touch you gave Sammy by having him hug his owner at the end. :)

  6. Hello again Shivani! This is a really neat story. I like how you changed the story and added your own personal flair to it. The modern twist is cool and I like how the zookeepers are the ones to calm the elephant down and turn him good again. I like how you tie the solution into the emotional nature of the elephants as it adds a new dimension to the story as well.
